About Flow Rate Units
- Volumetric flow rate (Q) measures the volume of fluid passing a cross-section per unit time. The SI unit is m³/s, but m³/h and L/min are far more practical in process and HVAC engineering.
- GPM (US gallons per minute) is the dominant flow unit in North American pump specifications, fire sprinkler systems and water treatment. 1 GPM = 3.785 L/min = 0.2271 m³/h.
- CFM (cubic feet per minute) is used for air handling, HVAC ductwork and fans in the US. It measures volumetric airflow and is typically converted to m³/h for international comparisons. 1 CFM = 28.317 L/min = 1.699 m³/h.
