About Density Units
- Density (ρ) is mass per unit volume. The SI unit is kg/m³. In materials science, g/cm³ (= 1000 kg/m³) is preferred — water has a density of 1.000 g/cm³ at 4°C, making relative density (specific gravity) numerically equal to g/cm³.
- lb/ft³ is used in US structural and geotechnical engineering for soil, concrete and timber densities. Concrete is typically 150 lb/ft³ (2,400 kg/m³); timber 25–45 lb/ft³ (400–720 kg/m³).
- ppg (pounds per gallon) is the standard density unit in oil well drilling, used to specify drilling fluid (mud) weight. Typical values: freshwater 8.34 ppg (1,000 kg/m³), standard mud 9–12 ppg, heavy mud up to 20 ppg.
- Quick reference: 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³ = 62.428 lb/ft³ = 8.345 ppg · 1 lb/ft³ = 16.018 kg/m³ = 0.1337 ppg · 1 ppg = 119.826 kg/m³.
