About Torque Units
- The Newton-metre (N·m) is the SI unit of torque, equivalent to 1 J of energy applied as a rotational force at 1 m radius. Engine torque, bolt preload and shaft torsion are all expressed in N·m in SI-based specifications.
- The lbf·ft (pound-force-foot) is the standard torque unit in US customary practice, used for fastener tightening specs and engine output. The lbf·in (pound-force-inch) is preferred for smaller torques in precision assembly and electronics.
- The kgf·m was commonly used in older metric standards (DIN, JIS) for bolt torque tables. Although superseded by N·m in modern standards, it still appears in legacy documents and some Asian markets.
- Quick reference: 1 N·m = 0.737562 lbf·ft = 8.85075 lbf·in = 0.101972 kgf·m · 1 lbf·ft = 12 lbf·in = 1.35582 N·m = 0.138255 kgf·m.
