About Force Units
- The Newton (N) is the SI unit of force, defined as the force required to accelerate a 1 kg mass at 1 m/s². It is named after Sir Isaac Newton. 1 kN = 1,000 N is commonly used in structural engineering for loads and reactions.
- The pound-force (lbf) is an imperial unit equal to the gravitational force exerted on a mass of one pound at standard gravity (g = 9.80665 m/s²). 1 lbf = 4.44822 N. It is widely used in US engineering practice.
- The kilogram-force (kgf), also written kp (kilopond), is the gravitational force on a 1 kg mass at standard gravity: 1 kgf = 9.80665 N. Though not an SI unit, it remains common in older European standards and everyday technical usage.
- Quick reference: 1 kN = 1,000 N = 224.809 lbf = 101.972 kgf · 1 lbf = 4.44822 N = 0.453592 kgf · 1 kgf = 9.80665 N = 2.20462 lbf.
