About Section Properties
- The second moment of area (moment of inertia, I) quantifies a cross-section''s resistance to bending. SI engineering typically uses cm⁴ or mm⁴; steel sections in structural databases (e.g. AISC, BS, GB) are listed in both cm⁴ and in⁴.
- The section modulus (S = I/c, where c is the distance to the extreme fibre) directly determines bending stress: σ = M/S. It is the most critical property for beam and column sizing in both SI (cm³) and US customary (in³) practice.
- Unit conversion rationale: 1 in = 2.54 cm, so 1 in⁴ = 2.54⁴ cm⁴ ≈ 41.623 cm⁴ and 1 in³ = 2.54³ cm³ ≈ 16.387 cm³. Section properties from US databases must be converted when applying SI design equations.
- Quick reference: 1 in⁴ = 41.6231 cm⁴ = 41,623.1 mm⁴ · 1 in³ = 16.3871 cm³ = 16,387.1 mm³ · 1 m⁴ = 1×10⁸ cm⁴ · 1 m³ = 1×10⁶ cm³.
