About Pressure Units
- The Pascal (Pa) is the SI unit of pressure, defined as one newton per square metre (1 N/m²). Standard engineering uses MPa (= 10⁶ Pa) for material stress and structural capacity — e.g., steel yield strength ≈ 250 MPa.
- The bar (1 bar = 100,000 Pa = 0.1 MPa) is widely used in hydraulics and pneumatics. The standard atmosphere (atm = 101,325 Pa) defines sea-level atmospheric pressure. Gauge pressure (barg, psig) subtracts ambient atmospheric pressure.
- PSI (pounds per square inch, lbf/in²) is the dominant pressure unit in the US for fluid power, tyre pressure and pipeline specifications. PSF (lbf/ft²) is used in structural engineering for soil pressure, wind load and floor loads.
