About Feed Rate Units
- Feed rate determines how fast the cutting tool advances through the workpiece per revolution (f) or per unit time (F). Per-revolution feed (mm/rev or in/rev) is used for turning operations; per-minute feed (mm/min or IPM) for milling and drilling.
- The relationship between the two modes: F (mm/min) = f (mm/rev) × n (RPM). Per-revolution feed is independent of spindle speed and better represents chip thickness, while per-minute feed is what the CNC controller actually uses.
- In SI/metric CNC programming (G21), feed is entered in mm/min or mm/rev depending on the G94/G95 mode. In imperial CNC (G20), feed is in IPM or in/rev. Most modern controls support both modes.
- Typical turning feeds: finishing 0.05–0.15 mm/rev; semi-finish 0.15–0.4 mm/rev; rough 0.4–1.0 mm/rev. Typical milling feeds: 0.05–0.3 mm/tooth, converted to mm/min = f_z × z × n.
