About Acceleration Units
- Acceleration (a) measures the rate of change of velocity. The SI unit is m/s². Standard gravity (g = 9.80665 m/s²) is defined as the nominal gravitational acceleration at Earth''s surface and is used as a reference unit in engineering.
- The g unit is widely used to specify vibration severity, structural seismic loads, inertial loads on components and accelerometer measurements. Ride comfort standards (ISO 2631) and earthquake engineering (seismic design codes) use multiples of g.
- The foot per second squared (ft/s²) is used in US customary dynamics. Standard gravity in imperial units is approximately 32.174 ft/s².
- Quick reference: 1 g = 9.80665 m/s² = 32.1740 ft/s² · 1 m/s² = 0.101972 g = 3.28084 ft/s² · 1 ft/s² = 0.3048 m/s² = 0.031081 g.
