About Cutting Speed Units
- Cutting speed (Vc) is the speed at which the cutting edge of a tool moves through the workpiece material. It is the key parameter for selecting spindle speed and greatly influences tool life, surface finish and machining efficiency.
- In SI and metric machining practice, cutting speed is specified in m/min (metres per minute). In US/Imperial machining (and many CNC control interfaces), SFM (Surface Feet per Minute = ft/min) is used. 1 m/min = 3.28084 SFM.
- Spindle speed (RPM) is derived from cutting speed: RPM = (Vc × 1000) / (π × D), where D is the workpiece or cutter diameter in mm. Alternatively in imperial: RPM = (SFM × 12) / (π × D_in).
- Typical cutting speeds: High-speed steel (HSS) turning steel ≈ 20–30 m/min (65–100 SFM); carbide insert turning steel ≈ 100–300 m/min (330–980 SFM); aluminium milling with carbide ≈ 300–600 m/min.
