About Angular Velocity Units
- Angular velocity (ω) measures the rate of rotation. The SI unit is radians per second (rad/s). It is related to linear velocity by v = ω × r, where r is the radius. In dynamics, ω = 2π·n/60, where n is speed in RPM.
- RPM (revolutions per minute) is the most common practical unit for motor, engine and turbomachinery speeds. Motor nameplates, gearboxes and pumps all specify speeds in RPM. 1 RPM = 2π/60 rad/s ≈ 0.1047 rad/s.
- Degrees per second (°/s) is commonly used in robotics joint speed specifications, gyroscope sensitivity and aerospace attitude control. It provides an intuitive sense of rotational speed without requiring knowledge of π.
