About Temperature Units
- The Kelvin (K) is the SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature, defined such that absolute zero = 0 K. The Celsius scale (°C) is offset from Kelvin: T(K) = T(°C) + 273.15. Both use the same degree size.
- The Fahrenheit scale (°F) is used in everyday US temperature measurement. Its conversion: T(°F) = T(°C) × 9/5 + 32. Water freezes at 32 °F (0 °C) and boils at 212 °F (100 °C) at standard pressure.
- The Rankine scale (°R) is an absolute temperature scale with the same degree size as Fahrenheit. T(°R) = T(°F) + 459.67. It is used in some US engineering thermodynamics and combustion calculations.
- Key reference points: Absolute zero = −273.15 °C = −459.67 °F = 0 K = 0 °R · Water freezes at 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K · Human body ≈ 37 °C = 98.6 °F.
