About Refrigeration Capacity Units
- The refrigeration ton (RT) is defined as the cooling power needed to freeze one short ton (2,000 lb ≈ 907 kg) of water in 24 hours: 1 RT = 12,000 BTU/h ≈ 3.517 kW. It originated in the ice-making industry.
- In SI practice, cooling capacity is specified in kW. Chillers and refrigeration systems in international markets list capacity in both kW and RT. 1 kW cooling = 0.2843 RT = 860 kcal/h.
