About Time Units
- The second (s) is the SI base unit of time, defined by the hyperfine transition frequency of caesium-133. It forms the basis for all derived time units: 1 minute = 60 s, 1 hour = 3,600 s, 1 day = 86,400 s.
- Unix time (POSIX time) counts the number of seconds elapsed since the Unix epoch: 1970-01-01T00:00:00 UTC. It is a universal standard for timestamps in computing, databases and APIs. Millisecond-precision timestamps multiply by 1,000.
- JavaScript''s Date.getTime() returns Unix milliseconds. Python''s time.time() returns Unix seconds as a float. SQL DATETIME and ISO 8601 (''YYYY-MM-DDTHH:mm:ssZ'') are human-readable equivalents.
- Leap seconds: UTC occasionally adds a leap second to stay aligned with Earth''s rotation. Unix time ignores leap seconds — it assumes every day has exactly 86,400 seconds, which causes a 1-second ambiguity at leap second events.
